Dazu Rock Carvings

Dazu Rock Carvings

The first ever carving at Dazu Rock Carving was started at around 650 CE during the early Tang Dynasty but the maximum numbers of statues and carvings were built only in the late 9th century during Song Dynasty. This was when Wei Junjing, Prefect of Changzhou, excelled at the carvings on Mount Beishan, and his example was followed by the collapse of the Tang dynasty by locals, and monks and nuns during the Five Dynasties and Ten Kingdom period. The first statues, built in the Southern Song Dynasty, were cliff-side stone carvings on Baodingshan hill which is 15 km northeast of the Dazu County.

Dambulla cave temple, also known as Golden Temple of Dambulla is the largest and best-preserved cave temple complex in Sri Lanka. Dambulla cave temple is situated at 148 km east of Colombo and 72 km north of Kandy in Sri Lanka. The construction of this temple dates back to the 1st century BCE. It is believed that Valagamba when exiled from Anuradhapura, took refuge in these caves for almost 15 Yrs.

Yungang Grottoes

In the ancient period, the Yungang Grottoes was known as Wuzhoushan Grottoes which are located about 16 km west of the city of Datong in the Shanxi province. These grottoes are carved at the base of the Wuzhou Shan Mountains in the valley of the Shi River. Like other grottoes, Yungang grottoes are also excellent examples of rock-cut architecture. It is believed that the antique Buddha statues and cave itself were built at 5th and 6th centuries. Regarding the number of the caves, there are 53 major caves along with 1100 minor caves and 51,00 niches which house the same number of Buddha statues.

This site is located on the small Jishi Hill 35 km west of the Yongjing Country of Linxia Autonomous Prefecture in Gansu province, around 100 km southeast of Lanzhou. The grottoes are considered to be second most valuable in terms of artistic value, and the first one to be Mogao Caves.

Laughing Buddha often mistook as a Shakyamuni Buddha, mainly by westerns, is, in fact, a bodhisattva. His Chinese name is Budai or Putai which means "cloth Sack" and comes from the bag that carries all the time. He is almost portrayed as smiling or laughing, hence the name Laughing Buddha was given to him. Sometimes, he is also referred to as Fat Buddha because of his fat belly. Apart from his fat belly, he is depicted as a bald man wearing a robe or sometimes carrying prayer beads. He is often portrayed as entertaining and can be seen with children, especially five. As history suggests that Budai was a Chan monk who lived in China during the Later Liang period, i.e. 10th century. He was considered a man of good and loving character.

It is recorded that 30% of the statues were carved during the Northern Wei Dynasty, 60% of the statues were carved during the Tang Dynasty, and remaining other 10% of the statues were carved during different other Dynasties.

Gal Viharaya: Rock temple of Srilanka

Gal Viharaya Reclining Buddha

Gal Viharaya is a rock temple of the Buddha located at the ancient city of Polonnaruwa in North Central Province, Sri Lanka. It was originally named as Uttararama which means Northern Monastery. It was built by King Parakramabahu I (1153-86) in the 12th century. The main feature of the temple is four Antique Buddha statues carved into the face of large granite rock depicted in a different position. The statue is considered to be among the best examples of the rock carving and sculpture of the ancient Sinhalese. In order to make the statue, the rock has been cut almost 15 feet (4.6 m) deep to create a rock face to accommodate the statue.
